Spikes & Baron Duel Monster Comet - Card Review #287

Card Name: Trageodia (VJMP-JP034)
Effect: When you received battle damages, this card can be special summoned from hand. Increase this card's attack and defense strength by number of cards in your hand * 600. Once per turn, by sending a monster from hand to Graveyard, gain control of a face-up monster on opponent's field with the same level as that monster. Also once per turn, you can choose a monster in your Graveyard, and until the End Phase of that turn this card would becomes the same level as the chosen monster.

Comment: Finally, after a week that the site was down from the internet (a tragedy...XD), it is backup and I have a lot of catching up to do.

First, I would look at one of the latest V-Jump promo. In the next few reviews or so, I would spend time talking about either the latest promos (which there are bunch of them) or just the use-to-be TCG exclusives from Extra Pack.

But first, let's look at the REAL tragedy...for opponent.

Art:
To really summarize the art of this card...well, it's a crazy looking (weird looking) creature. Well, it is from the GX manga (did not follow, so have no idea who use it/if it is even a card). Overall...well, since I'm getting lazy writing this portion of the review, you see a demonic creature, crazy one, popping to your face, scaring you...Tragedy? Not yet.
RATING: 7.8/10

Stats/Requirement:
This card is a level 10 monster with the ?/? stats. This card's stats depends on number of cards in your hand. While 600 multiplier is big, it is not really big enough. 3 cards gets you 1800 (OK stats), 4 nets 2400 (good), 5 nets 3000 (good for high tribute...although this card is not really one, more on that later). In other words, you cannot depend your life on beating down opponent using this monster, because in most of the time, the stats of this card would not be super high.

As for other things, this card is level 10 means without the effect (again...more on this statement later), this card is bad with Synchros. Yes...it's good with [Metamorphosis], but hey...that card was banned for a reason. Either way, Dark means you can easily put this card into those DAD decks, and also good with the still broken [DDVD]. Demon...ehh, well, not much people now-a-days use type theme deck anyway.
RATING: 7.2/10

Effect:
This card's text have 4 different effects. I had talked about one of them (the stats modification) already in the above sections, so it's time to look at the rest.

The first effect of this card is showing you how easy this card can be special summon. If you received battle damages, ANY battle damages, you can special summon this card from your hand. Well, it's just really easy to get battle damages, and unlike the very first card that you would think about when you first saw this card effect, [Emissary of Darkness - Gorz], you don't need an empty field for this card's effect to activate. The nice thing about this effect also? Well, it is SUPER hard to negate this special summon, outside of using [Divine Judgment], there is not much stopping this card at the time of special summon.

Now to the second effect of this card. The second effect of this card let you "send" a monster (not discard...if there is a good card for Dark World, it's Raven, more on that in future card review) from hand to Graveyard and take control of an opponent's monster, PERMANENTLY. Yes, you did not read it wrong, you can take control of that monster permanently until it dies. Although the monsters have to be the same level, it's just not so hard to find a level 4 monster from your hand to discard, right? Well...level 6 sometimes. Also, in today's game, the more cards in your Graveyard = the better anyway. In the end, this effect is just super powerful and I actually think it's not really fair...at all. The first tragedy for opponent...(and no, it's not all the bad news to opponent, yet)

OK, what about the second tragedy? Well, you can CHANGE the level of this card also. What's the point of the effect? Before Synchros, this effect is just super useless and pointless, but now in the world of Synchros, things change. A level is a level, by controlling the level of this card means that this card would be good using as the "level control" monster for a Synchro? Have a level 2 Tuner and want level 6? Change this to level 4. Level 8 ones? Change this to level 6. The crazy thing about this effect (some plus and minus) is that you purely CHOOSE the monster, you don't even have to touch it. The ridiculous thing is that you can use the same few monsters over and over to make the level right (although I doubt you would use this effect, during a game, more than twice), but the bad thing is, of course, it does not remove the monsters from game which means less ways to revival and abuse of RFG zone.

RATING: 9.9/10

OVERALL - 9.7/10 - This card just has it all, period. A SUPER-easy special summoning condition, a stats that most of the time would not be too shabby, and not 1, but TWO very useful effect. The crazy thing about this card, to me, is that there is just not much negative side to it. Low attack = DDVD, high attack = good attacker. It steals opponent's monsters at not much of a cost, easy to be Synchro material at no cost. It special summoned out from nowhere with an easy to achieve condition (you don't really need this card if you are not in a bad condition). I cannot think of a word to describe this card...but all I would say is, good luck, because you MAY see a lot of copies of this card running around (not sure how much...not living in an OCG environment right now) because it is just purely good. Gorz is good? Gorz should get out of the way of this card...because this thing is EVEN better than Gorz, and that's saying something.
